About Us

Thrifty Scouts was the brain child of a desire to give back to the Scouting community, and eschew the idea that in order to get outdoors one needed to be equipped with the most recent carbon-fiber, titanium, name-brand equipment that summits Everest or through-hikes the Appalachian trail.

As scout parents ourselves, and gear aficionados, we recognize that there are a zillion different choices out there when it comes to camping gear.  Which gear is best is a difficult decision to arrive to; and equipping a new scout with gear that will last, but won't break the bank is a more complicated process than that.

We're not out to review the "Best" gear.  There are already long-established media outlets doing that.  We have set out to review the "cheap" gear to see what works, what doesn't, what's worth buying, and what you'll end up replacing.

Tammy leads two troops for two kids and has been doing so for 10 years. Growing up she was a Girl Scout with her mom as her Troop Leader. Her father, and grandparents were also long-time scouts and scouters, so clearly it runs in the family.

As a self-proclaimed gadget guru, Tammy enjoys finding fun, new items and sharing them with others. She has been an active volunteer wearing many hats in the local district, council and at the Troop level.

Professionally she is a search and Social Media Professional, Blogger and Social Media Community Manager. Her favorite scouting activity is foraging and introducing the youth to what they can eat in the woods. Her most special scouting memorabilia is having her grandfathers campaign hat, and woodbadge hatchet. Go Eagles!

Scott is an Eagle Scout and active adult Scouter.  21 years later, he still keeps his Eagle Scout plaque on his desk at work, wears hiking clothes to work and keeps his father's pocket knife in the desk drawer.

In Scott's scouting career, he's participated in 8 units, in 4 councils, in 3 states, and 2 countries.  He's also been a volunteer at 4 district level positions and staffed 1 Jamboree.

Professionally, Scott has pursued a career in test engineering for the aerospace and automotive communities.  That might be why he's not afraid to break some gear so you don't have to.
